E060. Phase Separation: An Observation Appended to the Axiom

E060. Phase Separation: An Observation Appended to the Axiom

A. Accretion is automatic; deletion requires a decision. (prior)

To which is added:

B. An increase in processing speed acts in opposite directions at different strata.

The same instrument accelerates solidification above and volatilisation below — not because the instrument is asymmetric, but because the destination of its output differs.

I. Mechanism

Q1. Above, output sets into decision.
Credit determinations, prices, allocations, screenings, filters. What sets becomes the input to the next determination and sets again. Decision converts immediately into condition.

Q2. Below, output is consumed as stimulus.
Feeds, recommendations, generated matter. It does not set; it is displaced. Nothing becomes a condition.

Q3. Hence a single acceleration accelerates both solidification and flux.
One amplifier, two outputs.

II. Transfer to Temporal Structure

Q4. The upper observation window lengthens and grows finer.
As the predictive horizon extends and error contracts, more distant futures can be held as conditions.

Q5. The lower observation window shortens.
As the stimulus period contracts, attention span contracts with it, and the long wave becomes invisible in principle.

Q6. The gap between the two time-scales widens by orders of magnitude.
And two waves whose periods differ by orders of magnitude cannot observe one another.

Q7. Phase separation is not stratification but the loss of interaction.
Two states within one system, mutually non-existent.

III. Properties of the Phases

Q8. Solid — position fixed, form retained, internal motion near zero.
Locked asset holdings, sub-market mortgages unsold, closed partnership tiers, accumulated rule.

Q9. Gas — individual motion violent, mean zero, direction absent.
Job-switching, abstention, emigration, discontinuous labour, feed consumption. It generates pressure but not form. That German total hours worked stand at a post-reunification maximum while output does not move is the definition of this state.

Q10. Liquid — form not retained, volume retained, and above all: it flows.
The liquid phase is social mobility itself. Fluid, but with a destination.

IV. Bauman, Relocated

Q11. Liquid modernity is not an epoch but a transitional interval.
A metastable state following the melting of solid modernity. Not a terminus, but a phase passed through while temperature is still moving.

Q12. Bauman's fluidity was mobility.
This is why freedom and anxiety arrived together. What flows can be given direction.

Q13. The fluidity that remains is motion without destination.
The distinction between the tourist and the vagabond is the early observation of this. Identical motion; one a choice, the other a displacement.

Q14. Bauman read these as two modes within the liquid.
He did not read them as two phases in the course of separating.

V. Political Consequence

Q15. Politics is possible only in the liquid state.
Because it flows, direction can be given; because direction can be given, demand can be constituted.

Q16. The solid does not absorb demand.
Its form does not yield.

Q17. The gas does not generate demand.
It does not cohere.

Q18. Once separation completes, politics has no purchase on either phase.
This is the physical restatement of P13 (absence of organisation) and P14 (the eventless equilibrium). Not a new proposition — the same proposition in another language.

VI. The Undetermined Term

Q19. The symmetry break is not yet established.
As processing cost falls, the lower stratum gains access to upper instruments. Retail holders use institutional tools; individuals read legal documents; small operators run corporate analysis.

Q20. Equality of instrument does not entail equality of yield.
For judgment to convert into outcome, there must be something to commit. The return on capability is a function of capital.
The same analysis becomes a position for one and terminates as observation for another.

Q21. Q19 therefore softens the gradient without reversing the sign.

VII. The Character of the Transition

Q22. Phase transitions proceed continuously and complete discontinuously at the critical point.
It appears gradual until one is holding a different substance.

Q23. The timing of the critical point is unknowable in principle.
This is identical to the resonance proposition — the conditions are common, the phase alignment is not.

On Naming

Q24. The state after separation has no name.

The manner of postmodernism's termination was the same. The prefix post presupposes that a next exists; that presupposition has lapsed.

Separated modernity will serve provisionally, though it too merely designates an absence.

Summary

Liquidity was not freedom. It was temperature.

Bauman observed the heavy becoming light.
What is now observable is that lightness dividing in two — what cannot move, and what moves without direction.

When the interval between them empties, what could flow ceases to exist.

Social mobility was the liquid phase.
